Biography

Matt began painting in 2008, finding an affinity with the compositional techniques of the futurist and expressionist movements of the 20th Century.

He was commissioned by Red Bull Curates in 2013 to produce a large mural in a Shoreditch arts venue and later that year exhibited a series of abstract geometric works in West London and South West France. In 2015 his work "Ascending, Dungeness" was selected to hang at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

“Ascending, Dungeness” represents a development of earlier work and is from a series depicting monumental structures, where the treatment of height and perspective suggests movement and metamorphosis. Matt gravitates to imagery of the sublime, incorporating the colours and line making of his abstract work.

Matt has continued to explore these themes in a series of smaller impasto oils of the Karakoram mountains. He is currently working on a graphic novel, a new and experimental format for him, which allows the connection of individual drawings within a narrative, adding another dimension to his artistic practice.

Matt works full-time as a project manager in a major museum and lives in London.
